Can we prevent another fatal crash on Bay Bridge?

Most of us have heard the tragic news of the big rig driver who failed to negotiate the recently installed “S” curves in the Bay Bridge. A truck driver from Hayward died on Monday after he lost control on that portion of the bridge; he died when his truck crashed through the barrier on the upper section onto Yerba Buena Island 200-feet below.

In the wake of this latest automobile accident—there have been about 40 crashes on the "S" curve section since it opened in September—Caltrans plans to install a sign that shows drivers how fast they're going. The speed limit on the temporary span now drops from 50 miles per hour to 35 miles per hour. According to the CHP, excessive speed was blamed for the fatal crash.

Reducing the speed is certainly a step in the right direction, but is more to be done? As truck accident attorneys, our goal is to reduce the number of accidents and fatalities on our roadways each year, so we are thinking of other methods that could make the “S” curves safer. One additional measure might be so-called “rumble” dots—the dots across the road that alert drivers to dangerous conditions in the road. Increased signage would also help. In the meantime, please be alert as you travel the Bay Bridge.

San Francisco Bound Gambling Bus Crash With Truck; Kills Driver

What started out as a peaceful bus ride to the Indian Casino for a bit of gambling, has turned ugly, with a bus crashing head-on into a pick up truck, and killing the driver of the pick-up. CHP investigators are still investigating last Sunday night's fatal bus crash, which killed one person and caused serious personal injuries for several more. There is talk of a side swipe and of dangerous passing, however what is clear to this bus crash attorneyis that this bus was difficult to control. Was the bus speeding? Did the bus driver have the chance to avoid this crash? Had any of the drivers involved been drinking? How many seconds before the impact did each of the drivers have to avoid this deadly bus crash? These are all questions that a bus crash attorney will have to ask if he or she is retained by the passengers of this bus or by the family of the man who was killed when the bus smashed into the truck.

For more information on this subject, please refer to the section on Mass Transit Accidents.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Claude Wyle

Big Rig Crash On San Mateo Bridge Injures Drivers and Pedestrians

In yet another bizarre crash involving multiple trucks, three people suffered major personal injuries, including the driver of one of the trucks, a passenger in another truck and someone standing on the shoulder who was hit by flying debris. The truck accident on the San Mateo Bridge happened when one big rig truck rear-ended another truck that was parked on the shoulder. The third big rig then hit more trucks. One of the crashed trucks lost its load of cement which was strewn over the roadway. As truck accident attorneys who are handling a fatality which occurred this Summer on this very same bridge, we are starting to wonder if the State bears a share of responsibility for a dangerous roadway. What do you think? Why do certain roadways have so many injury accidents? Is it always all the drivers' fault, or might a dangerous roadway be a substantial factor?

For more information on this subject, please refer to the section on Tractor-trailer accidents.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Claude Wyle

Trucker Struck by Motorist While Chasing Hat.

This Monday, Rick Uvaney, a trucker, survived a freeway accident with relatively few injuries after being struck by a SUV in Canton, Ohio. Moments before, Uvaney pulled to the side of the road to secure his load when a gust of wind blew his favorite baseball cap into the median. Uvaney was struck by the SUF during his attempt to retrieve his cap. Luckily, he escaped with only a broken wrist and dislocated shoulder. Uvaney's experience is a good reminder of an old lesson: look both ways before crossing.

For more information on this subject matter, please refer to the section on Tractor-trailer accidents.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Claude Wyle

Verdict: 911 Dispatch "Grossly Negligent."

San Francisco trucking attorneys prevailed in San Francisco Superior Court when a jury found CHP dispatch "grossly negligent" in their handling of a deadly 2003 trucking accident. The dispatch center failed to call an ambulance, yet reported one was on its way. The mishandling could have been a factor in the death of Richard Housley, who was crushed between the truck and trailer of the truck he was driving. The jury found the mishandling to be a departure from the normal standard of care.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Claude Wyle

Passenger Killed; Distracted Driver Hits Tomato Truck

This Sunday, the death of a young woman could have been avoided had the driver of the van she rode in paid attention to traffic ahead of him. Instead, at approximately 9:54 p.m. Pakom Lengrichaem sped along I-5 just south of the Herndon crossing at 75 mph. Lengrichaem failed to notice traffic slowing ahead and struck the rear of a tomato truck driving at approximately 15 mph. Lengrichaem sustained serious injuries and was taken to a local hospital; the driver of the tomato truck was not harmed.
Marin Truck Accident Kills Innocent Goats!

Truck accidents can be just as deadly to animals as people. On July 8, 2007, a truck carrying approximately 400 goats overturned in San Rafael, California, when the truck driver attempted to make a sharp turn. Fearing a secondary auto accident, the CHP refused to free the goats from the trailer. Unable to escape, 243 of the goats suffocated to death after this big rig accident. Does this goat company have a claim against the CHP for the unnecessary wrongful deaths of these goats? Did the CHP perhaps save human lives by not allowing the goats to run free?

For more information on this subject, please refer to our section on Tractor-Trailer Accidents.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Claude Wyle
